The piece visually translates and elaborates some verses of the epic poem *Dar Oubarran* —which belongs to the Irzram oral tradition of the Rif— to examine the official account of the Disaster of Annual (1921) and its consequences for Spain’s contemporary history, from the rise of Africanist militarism to the Franco regime.
Using altered photographs of the battlefields, the work superimposes animal-like figures that highlight the brutality of the conflict and the courage of the Rif peasants in the face of colonial power.
The crows serve as a metaphor for aerial horror and the asymmetry of a conflict that culminated in the use of chemical weapons against civilians — a massacre long omitted from the official historical record and still not institutionally addressed.
